Would You Hire You?

In these uncertain economic times many turn to officiating to earn extra cash. Considering the possible hourly rate, officiating can bring some nice pocket change. However, the number of people interested in becoming referees and umpires is not growing as fast as in previous downturns in the economy. It's time to ask the question, why?

It is becoming more clear that officiating is no longer seen as a good way to make cash because of the abuse we suffer. It's just not worth the effort to someone fresh to our avocation.
How true. In our regular jobs, no one wants abuse heaped upon us in the workplace. It is sad that officiating is the exception. We get out of work early, often change clothes in the parking lot, work hard in heat or cold, make countless decisions bound to upset someone, all with little thanks.

If we were to show up at our job late, dress sloppily, be discourteous to others, and not put forth an effort, odds are we would not be employed at that place for long. But these behaviors are witnessed by teams, schools and parents every day in this nation. Why wouldn't people be upset with us? We are supposed to work hard for our money. If we aren't meeting the expectations of our clients, it's very difficult to bring new people to our little club.

We provide a service to the schools and teams we work. If we do not do our job, then why should they be happy they have to pay us at all? Go to a restaurant and have a bad meal, it's wasted money. If we show up and do a poor job for our clients, they will feel the same. Plus, the poor job one of does today, makes it that much harder for the official that follows to earn any respect for his work.

Have respect for your clients, have enough respect for your colleagues. Have respect for yourself to do a good job out there. Maybe, just maybe, your performance will spark interest and another will join our ranks.
